Sheffield is home to two leading universities. Established in 1843, Sheffield Hallam University is the eighth largest university in the UK, and the University of Sheffield is a Russell Group University, named among the top 100 Universities in the world in the Times Higher Education World Universities Rankings 2015-16.

Sheffield University has an income of £574.9m, and Sheffield Hallam, a turnover of £257.7m. The former sees 37,000 students apply for the 27,230 current available spaces while the latter has 31,508 students. There is a wide range of options available to students of both establishments; Hallam running 708 courses and Sheffield University being home to the Department of Computer Science, which has won the Queen’s Anniversary Award four times since 1998.

Sheffield University’s Department of Computer Science has expertise across a range of topics that have great potential for industrial application, including cybersecurity, data analytics, machine learning and AI, and Hallam has 30 research centres, including a Culture, Communication and Computing Research Institute.
