The creative and digital sectors have grown faster in the Sheffield City Region than anywhere else in the UK. This is thanks to competitive property and staff costs, a supportive business environment, the research and teaching of our two leading universities, and a large pool of talent.
Sheffield: A Magnet City
Sheffield has a magnetism. In early 2017, Perkbox and McLaren Automotive Limited established footholds in Sheffield, wishing to benefit from and participate in an ecosystem that is innovative, creative and rich in talent. These companies will further renew, strengthen and serve to attract additional investment into Sheffield. read more...
Sheffield, like many cities, has seen significant renewal over recent years. It has changed almost beyond recognition in the past three decades; we are on a journey towards reinvention, without losing sight of our heritage or what makes us unique.
The creative digital sector of Sheffield today is characterised by a renewed sense of pride in our city’s cultural and creative offering; an engaged and active grassroots community who run meetups and who are constantly striving for collaborations; and a more tech-savvy population who are aware of the potential of digital.
KPMG’s “Magnet Cities” report (2014) provides the most comprehensive and robust framework to showcase Sheffield’s strengths. The Magnet Cities report examined how cities can “flip the magnetic switch” to draw people, businesses and tourists to them. KPMG studied nine cities around the world, all of which successfully managed to flip that switch, and found that all nine cities went through an almost identical process of renewal, despite not being in contact.
Like any city, Sheffield is on a journey. Sheffield is a city of makers. Our creativity sits astride a long run heritage of creating high quality products for national and international markets. Fused with modern techniques, benefiting from commitment from both universities, inspired by the range of festivals and events in the city, and enjoying a spirit of independence, Sheffield is firmly placed as a recognised and respected city with a digital and creative heartbeat. The picture that emerges is a city on the cusp of something big. It’s an exciting time to be in Sheffield.
Independently benchmarked as one of the most cost effective cities in the UK for property and staff, Sheffield offers Grade A city centre office space at an average of £14 per square foot and salary costs are up to 28% lower than London. The city’s location at the heart of the UK’s major road and rail networks makes Sheffield one of the most accessible regional cities in the UK. With the development of the High Speed (HS2) rail link journey times to London will be significantly reduced.
Digital Connectivity – Sheffield has an excellent digital infrastructure and is well served by the major telecoms carriers including BT, Virgin Media, C&W and Origin Broadband. The Superfast South Yorkshire programme is also investing in the city’s digital infrastructure through a £22 million project to increase the provision of ultrafast broadband. In addition to this, Easynet, ASK4, Level 3 and SSE Telecom have all invested to develop infrastructure including points of presence in the city. Sheffield is the Outdoor City. As England’s greenest city, Sheffield has more than 200 parks, woodlands and gardens, and is the only UK city to have a national park, The Peak District, within its boundary. The open countryside offers stunning scenery, walking, climbing, cycling and general outdoor life in the country.
